2009 Calendar
Meetings, work parties, guided hikes and other events
Note: The Trails Committee
is starting up a
Trails Blog which will have much more up-to-date announcements.
Another Note: There is now a
Shelton Area Women's
Hiking Club. You will need to join that group in order
to see their event listing.
Trails Committee meetings are usually the
first Weds. of the month, 5:30 pm, Room 303, City Hall, immediately
followed by the Conservation Commission meeting at 7:00 pm. Work
parties are usually the 2nd and 4th Saturday of the month at 8:30 am, and are
still held if it is raining lightly.
To be notified of upcoming work party events, please send me an
email.
April 29, 5:45 Wednesday Evening Guided Hike,
Birchbank Trail. Meet at the trailhead on Birchbank Road, one mile
north of the Indian Well State Park Beach entrance, where the road
crosses the RR tracks. Note: This is an advanced trail. We
will be climbing the river bluff (about 200 feet in elevation), the
ground is uneven, and there are two stream crossings that some people
would find very difficult. Length is about 2 miles. We hope
to see the annual display of woodland wildflowers.
May 20, 6:00 Wednesday Evening Guided Hike, Oak
Valley & Dominick Trails. Meet on the south side of Shelton
Ave (Route 108) at the powerlines. The powerlines are located between
the intersections of Shelton Ave with Pine Street and Nells Rock Road.
Length about 2 miles, fairly easy. With any luck the Pink Lady
Slippers will be in bloom.
June 6, 10:30 Saturday Bridge to Bridge
Trails Day Hike (Raindate Sunday at 1:00 pm). Meet at the Pine Lake
Bridge and Rec Path trailhead on Shelton Avenue (Route 108). Nearest
cross road is Meadow Street. 4.5 miles of fairly easy terrain.
BRING WATER. We will provide transportation back to the
starting point or you may prefer to spot a car at Huntington Center, or
call for a ride. We highly recommend grabbing a lunch at
Huntington Street Cafe to end your hike - that's what the Trails
Committee members do.
June 6 Paugussett Trail hike - details TBA.
This is a more strenuous hike.

* Raindates for workparties
will happen only if there is heavy rain or thunderstorms on the day of the work
party. The core group of trail volunteers do tend to work in light showers and
prefer to keep to the schedule if at all possible due to busy schedules. If a
raindate is being called, it will be published on this website as soon as I hear about
it. I will also send out an email to those people who have asked to be on the
work party email list.
**Raindates for guided hikes
may happen even if rain or thunderstorms are simply threatening. In such cases, we
sometimes hold two hikes: One on the originally scheduled date, and then one on the
raindate so that people not wanting to hike in threatening weather can still enjoy the
hike. Raindate hikes will be announced on this page as soon as possible.
It has been my experience, however, that some of the best hikes are during
"moody" weather when there is perhaps fog and a passing shower - so don't rule
out a hike just because it's a little damp outside.
