Off to See the Lizard

GREETINGS.

I am Elvis
the Lizard King.
I can do anything.

My magnificant realm is hidden within a vast forest the humans call "Shelton Lakes Greenway". I don't know why they call it that, because there are no lakes among my holdings. There are rumours of lakes to the north, but they are beyond the pale.

My beloved kingdom is called "Lizard Lane". The kingdom is bounded by the high wires to the north and Lizardhead Rock to the south. Some humans passing through have been seeking a "Yellow Brick Road." What twits! Every creature here knows the path is BLAZED yellow, not PAVED yellow.

You are probably a human. If so, you are not allowed to live in my kingdom. However, I, Elvis, may grant you the privilege of paying homage to my greatness if you can prove yourself worthy.

First, you will need to find the Lizard Lane bridge that passes through my kingdom.  There are many possible ways to get there and places to park - a map might help.  My keeper enjoys parking at Nell's Rock Road near L'Hermitage Condominiums and walks 3/4 mile south to see me (going from white blazes to yellow), past the powerlines, but before you get to Crab Apple Circle in the new Huntington Woods subdivision.

After you find the foot bridge, you must tap your feet on it and sing:

Deja deja deja vu
Believe it and it will come true
Veja veja veja du
What works for me might work for you

Would you like to see me dance to this Jimmy Buffett tune?  Please watch my video

I will be watching. And I'll be more impressed if you wait until another human passes by and do it in their presence, especially if you use dramatic hand movements.

Finally, you must locate my castle to the east.  After you have finished singing, stand on the bridge facing downstream.  This stream flows into a hidden valley (unless it's dried up) over which the castle looks from the top of a cliff. Turn to your left and walk down the trail a few yards.  Look to the right for a small informal trail that goes through the mountain laurel and up a knoll.  My castle needs to be hidden from passing humans, which is why I am over 100 feet or 55 paces off of the human path.

My gneiss throne is a slab four feet long and almost as wide that tips slightly. This is where my sacred image was captured. I enjoy sitting up there looking down upon my secret valley. There is a bunker under my throne in the shape of a narrow triangle laying on its side.

Keeper's note:  Lizard Lane is so named partly because it leads to "Lizardhead Rock", which got that nickname in the 1990s when a developer proposed to demolish it for condos.  People fighting the proposal began referring to the rock as "Lizard head" after someone mentioned that it looked a bit like one, perhaps even Godzilla. For some reason, the name stuck.  Also, the "Lane" is home to an unusually high density of reptiles and amphibians, including spring peepers, wood frogs, several species of salamanders, box turtles and garter snakes.  If you turn over a log or two you are likely to see the salamanders (be sure to put the log back the way you found it).

The day I placed the box a spring peeper jumped onto the box when I stopped along the trail near Crab Apple Circle and perched there for a minute or so, as if he were claiming the box for the Kingdom.
